This isn’t meant to be a post commenting on balance or the balancing of maps, just me pointing out a really simple fact: destructible rocks covering the third base fundamentally favors Protoss and Terran in the PvZ and TvZ match-ups. I’m not saying it’s impossible to win versus Protoss or Terran on these maps, but it seems silly to build something in the map that would only hurt one race. Aside from exceptionally rare circumstances, Zerg is the only race that doesn’t have an army out when it naturally wants to take a third base.
Unless I’m completely mistaken, Terran has no build that involves building a third before enough marines are already out to destroy the destructible rocks. Even if they were going to do so, they could build their third next to the rocks and simply move it when the rocks have been destroyed.
Protoss have a build where they take a third base insanely early, but that build is quite risky and definitely isn’t the norm. Typically when Protoss moves out to take a third, they have plenty enough of an army to destroy the rocks very quickly.
Zerg, by design, want to produce as little army as possible. Every 2 zerglings or 1 roach made is a larva that can’t become a drone. This means that, while the other two races can naturally expand to their third while killing the rocks with whatever armies they’ve accumulated, Zerg has to actively hurt its economy to secure a third with rocks. The few units that would be produced to destroy said rocks are always too few in number and too ineffective in battle to be used as means of harassment. I understand that there are two-base openings that Zerg can do, as opposed to three-base openings, but that pigeonholes Zerg into a particular play-style on those maps, and that’s never a good thing.
I was kind of hoping this issue had been figured out, as we haven’t seen rocks in thirds since Tal’Darim Altar, but it seems as though Blizzard found it necessary to add rocks to block the thirds of their new map, Condemned Ridge.
Please don’t let this become a popular thing again, like it was in the past with maps like Delta Quadrant, Shattered Temple, Kulas Ravine and Steppes of War.
